P4 - Typographic Calendar

A client has asked us to design a three month calendar to give a way to their most important clients. They want all of the information in the calendar to be conveyed typographically.

The calendar will be seasonal, with each season comprised of three months.
You are to choose one of the following four seasons:
Winter - December, January and February
Spring - March, April and May
Summer - June, July and August
Fall - September, October and November

The calendar will have a theme—which you may also choose—that will most likely dictate who your client is.

You will need to research and compile written content for the theme, and for each month. They may be quotes, poems, lyrics, and/or verbal expressions relating to the calendar theme and month.

The three month calendar will be a six-page + cover publication. Each season will constitute an 11 x17 vertical page comprised of two 8.5x11 horizontal pages. The publication will also include a fron and back cover.

You may use up to three typefaces for the design of your calendar, and/or the design of each month.
You may also use up to three colors.

Each month will be comprised of a theme-based typographic seasonal expression, as well as the following calendar, expression and typographic information:
• the name of the month
• all the days of the week
• all the days of the month
• a written description of the typographic expression
• a written description of the typefaces used in the design
• any other written information you deem significant

Information on the covers will include:
• a title for the calendar
• a written introduction of the theme
• the client's identity and url
• your credit as designer

You will need to follow a pragmatic methodological approach to the design which must be documented on your blog, including:
• a project brief
• a design dummy
• typographic, visual, and written research
• creative conceptual development
• design roughs
• a design mock-up
• a final layout
• a final printed publication

Your design will most likely illustrate each of the four functions of typography— type as information, type as form, type as meaning, and type as concept.

You will be graded on your process, the message, creative typographic expression, appropriate typographic design, and craft.

ATTENTION:

Due to the Coronavirus threat this class will now be taught online

Note: The DOVAD building, as well as the print lab are closing, so we will NOT attempt any class meetings, nor will we be printing and binding the calendar, or hanging them in the hallway

Layout out the final calendar design as four 11x17 vertical pages with the first page the cover, and the next three pages, the months in seasonal order.

Post design files on your blog as you work through the design phases.
The Project Schedule below indicates what is due on the project and when it it due.
Be sure you have this process posted on your blog on the due dates by 9:00 am.

The plan right now is for me to send you out  timely individual critiques via e-mail.

I will also be posting some content and instruction regarding the project on the class blog. It will linked to the Class Content navigation on the  blog. It will be updated throughout the project, so be sure to periodically check it out.

Try not to get stressed out about this working situation. Going online is making the class project  much like a real-world design scenario. I may adjust the calendar design schedule a bit, but right now we are sticking with the due dates listed. Let’s see how things go. If you any questions, inquire amongst yourselves, and/or send me an e-mail.

I will attempt to hold a video conference critique on the project via Canvas or Google for Tuesday, March 31st.  I will let you know if you are going to attempt it.

I encourage you to  communicate amongst yourselves regarding your work on the project.
You might consider one-on-one communication, or setting up a group discussion and/or conference on Canvas, or in Google, to communicate with one another.
