P1 - Meaningful Words

TYPE conveys meaning in two ways simultaneously:
– First is the meaning of the word itself (semantics).
– Second is the meaning expressed by the form and presentation.

This design project will explore the relationship between both – semantics and form in type.
We will discover how form and presentation can change the meaning and interpretation of a word.

Use Illustrator or InDesign for this project.

Create six well crafted typographic expressions.

Each exploration will be composed within in a square.
The square may be a color or white with a light grey border.
_______

You might want to explore each initial typographic expression separately, one at a time, on a 6"x6" square. Once you are satisfied with the designs, critique and refine each one one more time. Once you are satisfied with the expresses and craft of the designs, gather them together for presentation:

ATTENTION:

The requirements for this project have been simplifiedInstead of requiring 12 initial layouts of your four chosen words, I have reduced the requirement down to sixThis means you will have a total of 24 initial typographic explorations, instead of 48.

We are also combining the initial explorations and final refined explorations into one singular explorationYou may now also add color and texture to your six layouts if necessary.

Lastly, present all six word explorations together on an 11x17 sheet with each square 4"x4" with a 1" space between each. Add a 1" margin on the top and sides, and a 2" margin on the bottom of the page.

You will now have four 11x17 sheets, one for each word, wth six typographic explorations each, for presentation on Tuesday, January 21st..
