P5 - Board Graphics

The final Experimental Type design project is to create three board graphics.
Choose snowboards, skateboards, or skis.

Typographic Messages

The design solutions will be primarily typographic

The messaging objective of the design must convey a theme indicative of the characteristics of the type of board the experimental typographic are decorating.

For example, if the snowboard is a free ride, all-mountain type board, then the name of the board, as well as the words and/or phrase of the expressive typographic should convey something about the mountain snowboard.

Although I am not encouraging it, you may if you wish typographically express the brand name of the board, but you must not limit yourself to the brand’s typographic standards, otherwise avoid using existing brand identities on your designs.

While this project is typographic, you may use subordinate graphics and/or an image for signification or context within your design, but you will be graded on how well the additional graphics or image expresses the typography.

If you wish, you may also creative typographic base graphics in addition to the top graphic of your designs.

Board Specifications

You will need to access design spec templates for your boards and their types.
You can find them on the web at sites like:

Final Design Presentation

Use a design mockup template for the final presentation(s) of your three designs.
You can find them at sites like:

I will post pertinent information and feedback regarding the project on the blog and also send you e-mails. We will most likely conduct student group video critiques for the project on the 9th and the 14th, and have a full class review of the final designs on the 16th. I will let you know.

Here are two ski designs I did for Voile in the late 1990's or early 2000's.
These two ski designs (not my graphics, but the skis themselves), changed backcountry skiing as well know it today.
The Insane ski was the lightest and widest backcountry ski manufactured at the time.
It was truly insane.
